Mind Body Medicine — Music Therapy

Music Therapy

Music therapy is the use of musical interventions, such as singing, listening, playing instruments, and music and imagery exercises, with the intention to work towards specific therapeutic goals. Music therapy goal areas include the restoration, improvement, and maintenance of communication and motor, emotional, and social skills.

Potential Application for Children with Cancer

Children with cancer are often faced with periods of isolation. Music therapy can help facilitate self-expression in a non-threatening, socially interactive environment and provides opportunities to discuss concerns and fears. Music assisted relaxation techniques may also be useful prior to medical procedures.
