Aromatherapy

What is Aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils from plants, for use in health, beauty or pleasure.

Can I use any type of essential oil?
No. There are certain plants that should not be used in various conditions. Citrus oils, for example, can render the skin hypersensitive to ultraviolet rays so you would not use on skin directly exposed to sunlight or radiation. Check with your healthcare practitioner before trying them. Keep in mind that different aromas have different properties, such as some can be relaxing while others are stimulating.

What situations are good to use Aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy can be used for its calming effects during times when a child is anxious, sleepless or nauseous. Other children find aromatherapy to be particularly beneficial during the stem cell reinfusion part of Peripheral Blood Stem Cell or Bone Marrow transplant. The pleasant aroma helps to mask the unpleasant odor of the preservatives in the stem cell product. Aromatherapy is effective in reducing nausea in this setting as well.

How can I use Aromatherapy in the hospital?
We have small diffusers that you can plug into an electric outlet in your child's room. These diffusers can emit scents for several hours. Contact our Integrative Therapies Program or your child life specialist for more information.

Can I use too much?
Yes, it is very important to follow the instructions on dosing. For example while lavender is sedating in a low dose, too much can cause insomnia.
